Celebrating Cranes and Operators

No new job leads this week. For last week’s leads, check out last Saturday’s job listings.

One thing you may notice about last week’s heavy equipment job listings is that there were a few crane operator openings around the nation. That’s a good thing. Crane operators make good things happen.

What Do Crane Operators Do?
On many work sites, crane operators are the heavy equipment specialists who move large objects and material from one location to another. They operate various types of cranes using levers, foot pedals, wheels, and other navigational instruments to get the job done.

They may also be responsible for making minor repairs to their equipment and routine maintenance. Usually, they are responsible for setting up and inspecting moving equipment before operation.

Crane operators may be called upon to operate a variety of types of heavy equipment in a variety of work environments. For instance, one day they may be in a warehouse moving pallets with forklifts and conveyor belts. The next day they may be on a construction site moving lumber or dirt and rock. Telephone companies use cranes for lifting their workers into the air for tree trimming.

Who Hires Crane Operators?
A lot of different industries and types of companies hire crane operators. Here’s a sampling of the types of employers you may work for as a crane operator:

  • The military
  • Defense contractors
  • Construction companies
  • Mining operations
  • Trucking companies
  • Shipping industry
  • Fisheries
  • Oil & gas exploration companies
  • Logging operations
  • Utility companies

And that’s not all. There are a ton of different types of businesses and industries that employ crane operators. Heavy Equipment School celebrates the crane operator as an essential part of today’s workforce. Learn how you can become a certified crane operator right now.

Heavy Equipment Job Listings: April 18, 2015

This week, there’s a little of everything. From openings for heavy equipment or mobile crane operators to companies looking for Class-A CDL truck drivers, employers want qualified people who can do the job safely and professionally. These are jobs that can cause damage to property and people if the operator is not qualified, so the level of training and the source of that training is something that is carefully examined.

The best training schools have a reputation for excellence that employers seek. That’s why the ATS Employment Assistance department keeps adding to the database of companies who want ATS graduates to apply — and it’s why ATS can say that graduates have lifetime employment help.

Another perk of being an ATS graduate is free access to the Total Resources Network, a site for professionals in the skilled trades to connect. Graduates of ATS have learned how to use this job site to its full potential and find it very useful as they develop their careers.

Who Drive Trucks Make More

Much of the heavy equipment out there is transported on the back of a flatbed truck — and if the operator of the heavy equipment is able to load the machinery, drive it where it needs to go, and unload it to do the job, then that operator, who can drive trucks, is worth a lot more to an employer.

ATS Offers Short-term Truck Driver Training

The Class-A CDL Truck Driving Program can be added to the heavy equipment operator training program a student is taking without disrupting the schedule by more than a month. That means in addition to getting trained to operate heavy equipment safely, you also can be trained to transport that equipment safely. There are strict guidelines to the transport of big machinery because it has to be securely strapped down to the trailer before taking it on the road. If it’s just sitting on the flatbed, it’s dangerous.

Because of that danger, there are regulations concerning securing cargo, including heavy equipment. Not just anybody can do it because not everyone knows how to stabilize and secure the load so it won’t shift when the truck goes around curves, for instance. And driving that truck is something not everyone can do safely. The Class-A CDL Truck Driving Program teaches all the procedures. It also allows students to ask questions and understand why those procedures are a good idea.

Insurance companies often require that the operators and drivers meet high standards of training or companies pay a penalty. That is one reason the boss likes ATS training. But having an employee who can both operate and transport the equipment has another benefit to the company: There doesn’t have to be an additional hire to drive the truck from one site to another. That’s a big reason for the higher wages you can get when you add the Class-A CDL Truck Driving Program to your heavy equipment classes.

What Does The Future Hold Operators?

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Construction Equipment Operators are predicted to see an increase of 19% in their job outlook — that’s more than the average (11%), and this prediction goes from 2012 to 2022. Why such a difference?

Heavy Equipment Jobs Stay In The Area

You can’t import a ditch already dug or a pipeline already laid. It’s impossible to outsource road or home construction because these things have to be done on the site. Somebody working in a call center might see their job go overseas — somebody needing a crane or backhoe has to find a person to operate that equipment where the job site is located, right here in this country.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of opportunities for heavy equipment operators to find work in other countries if they want it. It does mean the operator goes where the work is and the work is tied to the location.

The More Equipment You Can Run, The More Jobs You Can Do

The ATS Advantage is that students and graduates get more than exposure to a variety of equipment that enables flexibility on the job. That flexibility is good, but the great news is that the training is the best and it comes with financial assistance, housing, and lifetime employment assistance.

Since ATS has successfully trained thousands of graduates in heavy equipment operation, mobile crane operation, and Class-A CDL driving, there is an abundance of experience to share. There are many types of equipment that students are exposed to because in real life you will encounter that variety.

The lifetime assistance in employment gives flexibility too — if the job market dries up where you are at, you always have help finding something new in our comprehensive job database.

Pay Attention Or Pay The Price

What is the cost of not paying attention to what you are doing? Sometimes that cost isn’t much, because you are sitting in a chair at home zoning out during a commercial. But if you are sitting in the driver’s seat on the job, the price of not paying attention can be far higher than anyone wants to pay.

When a heavy equipment operator isn’t paying attention to what they are doing, bad things can happen. Most of your training at ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Training School will have safety rules repeated over and over again. Your teachers will be discussing what can happen, talking about why that rule applies, and sharing stories of what they’ve experienced. In a lot of ways, you’ll think that safety is being talked about too much.

But there’s a reason why ATS has a reputation for training some of the best heavy equipment operators around, and that reason is the high standards of performance our graduates are taught. Part of the high standards of performance are safety standards that have been repeated so many times they become automatic.

Even if you aren’t paying attention, if safety is a habit, then you’ll be more apt to stay safe on the job. But the best idea is to pay attention to all you’ve been taught and the conditions you are working in. Paying attention to what’s going on around you, to where your machine is and your blind spots, will keep everybody safe.

Heavy equipment is too big for a mistake to be minor most of the time. Mistakes are costly, and that’s why the best heavy equipment operators pay attention to what they are doing even when it’s routine.

How Versatile Do You Want To Be?

On the job, the most versatile person is apt to be the one who stays on the payroll, right? It doesn’t matter what kind of job you are talking about either, because the principle applies to every industry, white or blue collar. In the heavy equipment field, that versatility looks like an operator who is familiar with many kinds of machines and able to figure out what to do with them to get the job done.

ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Training School has the goal of equipping graduates to be versatile operators able to do what has to be done and do it professionally. That means our students get hands-on training on different types of machinery and become familiar with the big picture of heavy equipment. It also means they learn how to learn, because there will be new stuff thrown at us on the job.

The chance to get a CDL license is offered, too, so you can drive trucks — that is something most heavy equipment operators find they need when they enter the workforce. A lot of heavy equipment gets loaded and moved on a flatbed, so if the operator can be the truck driver, too, that operator is the person who gets hired.

If an employer is trying to decide who to hire, or who to keep on the payroll, the person with the safety certifications, CDL, ability to learn, and versatility is going to be the more valuable employee every time. That’s the goal of ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Training, and that’s why our graduates get hired.
