Heavy Equipment Operators

Free Job Placement Service For All ATS Graduates

Is a job placement service worth considering when looking for work? Undertaking a heavy equipment training program is a sensible move considering the employment outlook for the next two years. However, if you are moving into the heavy equipment field from a totally unrelated field, you may be wondering where to look and how to secure that first job. If your training provider includes a job placement service then it is well worth considering as an aid to gaining that first job.

ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Schools have a free job placement service that is available to all students who attend one of their schools. From the moment you commence your training you can access the service and receive help identifying potential employers and in developing application material.

Job placement services that are attached to recognized training schools are ideally placed since they often communicate with and work with employers when delivering training programs. ATS, for example, has been delivering training for several decades. Over that time we have developed strong relationships with many employers. We know what skills they are looking for and what sort of people they prefer to employ.

Everyone is settling down to a peaceful Christmas period. This may be the perfect time to reflect on your current career and determine if you are going in the direction you want. If not, consider a career change and whilst doing that, consider a challenging yet exciting career as a heavy equipment operator. Undertake your training through ATS and our job placement service will help you find that first job.

Heavy Equipment Operators Greening America

Heavy equipment; bulldozers, graders, excavators; all lumbering giants with a reputation for destroying all that lays before it, right? Wrong. Heavy equipment operators have been at the forefront of greening projects for decades. In fact, since way before ‘greening’ became so important.

Whether building roads or clearing land for farming, heavy equipment operators have had a reputation for mindlessly destroying everything in sight. Many in fact had the opposite view. If they were clearing land for a road, they only cleared what was needed for that road. The same has been true for general construction and farming.

These days, heavy equipment is actively involved in rehabilitation projects and this is set to jump markedly as President Obama’s aim to create 5 million new green construction jobs over the next ten years comes to fruition. This will be achieved through an investment of $150 billion in construction, most of it in heavy construction.

For individuals who care for the environment, gaining skills as heavy equipment operators can set them up for life in careers that will help them achieve their environmental aims. Training heavy equipment operators for green projects is part of ATS Heavy Equipment Operator Schools aim with training programs designed to pass on some of the knowledge required to work in this area.

Are you interested in greening America? Are you interested in a career as a heavy equipment operator? If you answer yes to both questions, check out what ATS has to offer in the way of training for future green heavy equipment operators.

Heavy Equipment Safety – Look Up And Live

Have you ever paid any attention to heavy equipment safety campaigns like the ‘Look Up and Live’ campaign? One of the leading causes of death to heavy equipment operators is by accidentally coming into contact with overhead power-lines. Whilst the experience for the operator is not that great, energy consumers in the area won’t be thrilled either when they lose their power.

Whether you operate a farm tractor, an excavator, crane or any other heavy equipment, being aware of power-lines has always got to be at the back of your mind. Those working around you have also got to be aware of those power-lines so they can guide you safely around them. As one of the leading causes of death for heavy equipment operators, it is not an issue that can be taken lightly.

Most heavy equipment safety training programs include a component on overhead power-lines. This is because of the number of deaths and injuries that occur each and every year. Unfortunately, there is not a lot that can be done to protect operators should they come into contact with those power-lines. The simple solution of course is to avoid contact with them.

This is just one of many issues that heavy equipment operators need to consider in their day-to-day working lives. If you are planning on training to become a heavy equipment operator, one attribute that is going to be very important is your ability to pay attention to factors not directly related to what you are doing.

Heavy equipment training will always focus on three areas – the equipment itself, providing skills to operate that equipment, and knowledge of heavy equipment safety.

Heavy Equipment Careers – Why You Shouldn’t Specialize

There are many individuals who investigate heavy equipment careers but their approach is often focused on a single piece of equipment. Bulldozers are always a popular choice, possibly because they are one of the most visible pieces of heavy equipment in use. However, specializing in one area can have its down sides.

We now live in a world in which diversity is becoming the key to success. If you place yourself in the position of an employer, who are you going to put off during tough economic times? I will give you a choice – a bulldozer operator or an operator that can work with three or four different types of equipment. Common sense says to dismiss the bulldozer operator.

The employee that can operate a diverse range of equipment is far more valuable to the employer. In fact, as much as I hate to say it, the chances are that two or three specialist operators will get their marching orders since the employee with diverse talents can replace all of them – although not at once.

At present, there is a strong demand for heavy equipment operators across the full range of equipment. The trap is that many new operators will decide to specialize as an operator on one machine. They will certainly find plenty of work over the next 12 to 18 months – but what happens then? If there is another downturn in the construction industry, they may well find their heavy equipment careers grinding to a stop.

In the meantime, those with diversity are able to either find or maintain their employment because of the value they offer to an employer. There is a simple long term lesson to gain from this – if you are looking at heavy equipment careers, maintain as much diversity as possible and this starts by undertaking your heavy equipment training on a range of machines.

Sure, you can specialize in one area if you wish, but whenever you get a chance to operate other pieces of equipment, grab it and keep your diverse skills up-to-date. If your employer knows you have this diverse range of heavy equipment skills, your value to them will increase and with it an assured career as a heavy equipment operator.

Do Your Heavy Equipment Operators Require Specialized Training?

The introduction of new equipment and new technology can often bring operational difficulties. This is particularly true for heavy equipment like bulldozers, excavators, and graders. The introduction of GPS is one such technology that was discussed in yesterday’s post. Other technologies include the introduction of computer systems, particularly those that help to monitor and optimize hydraulic fluids.

Many businesses are able to take up training offers made by the manufacturers of these machines. Others are either not in a position to take up any offers, find them too expensive, or, in many cases, are simply not offered any training – they are just handed instruction booklets.

Associated Training Services has a specialized division – ATS Specialized Training – that offers specialized training to businesses across the nation. Your employees can be trained at either one of ATS’s training schools or at the employee’s workplace. Training is designed to meet the particular needs of the business taking into account the type of equipment used and the type of work undertaken by that equipment.

Employees can also be assessed using nationally accredited assessment criteria. These criteria have been set by organizations such as the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), OSHA, and MSHA. For crane operators, they can be assessed using NCCCO criteria to become certified crane operators. This is a compulsory requirement in some states.

Specialized heavy equipment training is not for every employer. However, when undertaken as a workgroup, it can increase productivity and decrease accidents and downtime. Contact us at 1.800.678.8120 or through our website for more information on specialized heavy equipment training.
