Heavy Equipment To The Rescue

I watched with interest the other day as a series of heavy equipment machinery came to the rescue of a derailed train. The train lost three of its trucks, each running off the tracks and rolling over. The three trucks where each filled with gravel.

It was a fine piece of coordination. The crane came in and first emptied the trucks completely by lifting and tipping the contents out. The crane then moved the empty trucks to one side. It was then time for the bulldozer to come in and push all the gravel away from the tracks and into neat piles.

The rail gang then moved into action removing all the twisted track and laying new track. Once the new track had been laid, the rail trucks where then lifted back onto the tracks. The engine carted them away while another engine brought in a new series of trucks. A front end loader then loaded all the gravel into the new trucks.

This team work had the tracks cleared and repaired and reopened within four hours of the accident occurring. It took the skills of these operators working in a fairly confined space together with the coordination and planning of the rail boss to get the job done. And they did.

As a heavy equipment operators, whether it is as a crane operator, bulldozer driver or front end loader operator, you just never know what your next job may be and what sort of situation you may find yourself in.

Wheel Loaders Are Real Loaders

A wheel loader is nothing more than a front end loader with wheels rather than tracks. As with all front end loaders, wheel loader can dig and as well load material.

Wheel loaders are classified according to their bucket sizes and operational weights. Don’t be fooled into thinking they are all small. Many are quite large and very powerful.

The Wheel loaders are often engaged in construction works, ranging from road work, plant loading, shipping and mine face excavation.

The requirements to operate a wheel loader are no different to those required to operate a front end loader. Experience is always a plus, however, you have to get a start somewhere which means first acquiring the training that will give you the skills.

ATS Heavy Equipment Training Schools can provide the appropriate to get you started as wheel loader operator. Our training is accredited an recognized by hundreds of employers as providing highly skilled operators ready to start work.

There Is More Than One Type Of Heavy Equipment Loader

Loaders are one of the more common types of heavy equipment found on construction sites. They are similar to a tractor with the bucket on the front with the engine at the back as a counter weight. Unlike excavators, most loaders are wheeled rather than tracked. There is more than one type of loader and some are capable of doing multiple jobs depending on the attachments used.

The loader described is often referred to as a front end loader. These are also known as bucket loaders or scoop loaders because they have a wide square bucket that tilts to capture the dirt or to dig out an area. The bucket is a removable attachment so you can also use it as a forklift or attach a clam shell type of bucket that opens to grab whatever you are working on in its jaws. Loaders of this type are also used for snow removal, dirt removal, farming, and on construction sites.

Other loaders include the little cousin of the front end loader, the skid loader. These come with wheels or tracks and are much smaller loader than front end loaders. One of the major differences between a front end loader and a skid loader is the positioning of the lift arms. On the skid loader they are behind the driver’s shoulders rather than forward of the cab.

Backhoe loader or more commonly referred to as simply backhoes combine two pieces of equipment into one. They have the traditional loader with the front end bucket. However, the rear of the vehicle has a hydraulic arm to which a bucket or ‘hoe’ is attached. The operators seat swivels so the operate can see what he or she is doing when operating the backhoe portion. When using the backhoe there are hydraulic stabilizers the operator can place on the ground in order to lift it off the ground and provide added traction and balance.

To operate any of these pieces of heavy equipment requires training. Basic training on a front end loader will provide most of the skills required to operate all variations. Some extra training may be required to operate a backhoe. ATS Heavy Equipment Training Schools can provide all the training required to successfully heavy equipment like those described.

Front End Loaders – Wheels Or Tracks?

Heavy equipment such as front end loaders can be manufactured with either wheels or tracks. The wheeled variety generally have large wheels that can stand shoulder high. Each type has its own use and its own breed of followers. Many prefer the track style whilst others have a preference for the wheeled style.

Front end loaders with wheels are are used on farms, with utility companies, in road construction and in heavy industries. Wheeled front-end loaders offer higher travel speeds than tracked models but do not have as much traction – an important consideration when working in slippery and uneven areas.

When working on slopes or in wet and slippery conditions then a tracked model can be the safer option. It has to be remembered that tracked front end loaders can often damage the ground they operating on. For this reason wheeled machines will need to be used on finished surfaces such as rounds or construction site clean ups.

Both machines operate in similar styles, the only major style being the method of propulsion. Heavy equipment training is similar for both machines although some extra training may be required on tracked vehicles to get a firm understanding of steering – wheeled machines are generally operated through a standard steering wheel. Tracked machines turn by controlling the speed and motion of each of the tracks.

If operating a front end loader is your preferred heavy equipment job, visit ATS Heavy Equipment Driving Schools to get a firm start in your career.

What’s the difference between bulldozers and front loaders?

Front loaders are special pieces of equipment that are impressive to look at. They tend to make a lot of other pieces of heavy equipment look like dwarf material. A lot of people are confused about what bulldozers and loaders do. Bulldozers and loaders are similar but they do two very different things. They are commonly mistaken for one another, though.

Bulldozers are not the same as loaders

Front loaders and bulldozers are available in many different sizes. The tractor part looks almost the same on both. You can find open cabin configurations on them and you can also find closed cabin configurations on each.

Sometimes bulldozer blades can be fitted with front loaders. This allows them to do a type of light dozing. This is not as good as the bulldozers, but it can be good enough when the requirements of the work project aren’t so heavy.

Front loaders with bulldozer blades can make distinguishing between loaders and bulldozers much more complicated and difficult. This is because the attachment is normally used for other things. The attachment that is used for loaders is usually a bucket. This lets you scoop and carry loads. To top off the confusion, bulldozers can also be fitted with buckets.

One way you can check the difference between loaders and bulldozers is if you look how far up they are from the ground. If you look at comparatively sized front loaders and bulldozers, the bulldozer will always sit a little closer to the ground. Loaders are higher up off the ground because of the big wheels that they have. Bulldozers don’t have this because they run on tracks. Because of the wheels, you can use loaders in almost any situation. Bulldozers can drive over very rought terrain.

Loaders can provide you with a very good career opportunity
. The reason loaders are so special is the fact that they are versatile and widely used. Once you get certified in loaders, you can find work in mining, forestry, construction and agriculture. Loaders can provide just about anyone with a flexible career opportunity.

Enjoy great working conditions with loaders

Most loaders have air conditioning and a closed cabin, so you are away from the heat and cold. You can work comfortably, regardless of whether it is hot or cold outside. Loader drivers also have peace of mind because they have a job hat is low impact. If you want to find out more information on loaders and how to get your certification, contact ATS today.

Front Loaders and Bulldozers, What’s the Difference

For many people, big front loaders are special pieces of heavy equipment. They are impressive to look at, as they tend to dwarf a lot of other machinery. Many people confuse front loaders with bulldozers, but they are a very different piece of equipment that performs an entirely different function. First lets look at the similarities between the two and see why they are so commonly mistaken for one another.

Bulldozers and front loaders are both available in a range of sizes. The tractor part of the equipment looks almost identical. You can find closed cabin and open cabin configurations of each, so here they are almost the same. Front Loaders can sometimes be fitted with bulldozer blades to allow them to do light dozing. They are not as good at dozing as bulldozers but they can do an acceptable job when the requirements are not too heavy. Seeing front loaders with bulldozer blades only deepens the confusion for most people. The attachment that is regularly used for front loaders is a bucket. It is designed to scoop and carry loads from one place to another. It looks a bit like a bulldozer blade, but is actually very different. Yes, bulldozers can also be fitted with a bucket.

The difference is a little closer to the ground. If you look at comparatively sized bulldozers and front loaders, the bulldozer will always sit lower to the ground. Front loaders tower over everything because of the enormous wheels that are attached to them. Bulldozers run on tracks. Wheels mean that you can use front loaders almost anywhere. The tracks of a bulldozer can damage paved surfaces, but they give great traction and allow them to drive over very rough terrain.

Loaders are a versatile type of heavy equipment that provides flexible career opportunities.

Operators of loaders enjoy great working conditions. Most loaders have a closed cabin and air conditioning, so drivers are out of the elements. You can work in comfort whether it is hot or cold. Beyond the obvious creature comforts of loaders, loader drivers also have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they have a job that is reasonably low impact. Working in construction, especially if you are an unskilled laborer, you are exposed to risk on a daily basis. The work can be fun, but injuries do occur and they take their toll over time. Not everyone has the physical characteristics that allow them to perform such a demanding job for any great length of time. If you are working in loaders, the machinery does most of the hard work.

Loaders offer interesting challenges. There is a large range of attachments that can be fitted to loaders. They are used to perform all manner of tasks and providing that you get the training, you can find yourself enjoying a wide variety of jobs. Front Loaders Make Dollars and Sense

What are front loaders and why would you want to drive one? Front loaders are also known as front-end loaders and sometimes simply as loaders. They are a great piece of heavy equipment, with an enormous range of functionality. They come in a number of different sizes to suit the tasks that they are required to perform and the locations that they are being used in.

The typical front loader has a wide bucket that is made for moving material. That is their primary function, moving loads from one place to another. The bucket is mistaken, by many people that are unfamiliar with heavy equipment, to be a bulldozer blade. In fact, bulldozers and front loaders have little in common (though a blade can be fitted to a front loader to turn it into a light dozer).

A range of different hydraulic attachments make front loaders suitable for a range of tasks. They are wheeled, not tracked, so they are easy to use in built up environments. Being wheeled, they don’t have nearly as much power as a heavy tracked bulldozer, but they get most jobs done quickly. Wheels make front loaders maneuverable and faster moving, and it is for these reasons that they are so popular.

Learning to Operate Loaders Makes a Great Career Move

Loaders might not be the heaviest of heavy equipment, but what they lack in size they make up for in versatility. The smaller size of loaders makes them useful in built up areas where larger heavy equipment won’t easily fit. Loaders are generally wheeled, not tracked, so they can operate on paved or sealed services without creating problems. Loaders bring heavy equipment to places that it might not otherwise fit.

There is a wide variety of attachments for loaders that can see them performing a range of tasks. While their traditional use is moving loads, these days they do quite a bit more. Different attachments really give loaders a full range of operation. They can be used to dig, as light dozers, or for their traditional purposes. Some loaders are tracked, but the majority is wheeled, their size makes them quite easy to maneuver and the learning process for most people is fast.
