Urgently Wanted – Long Distance Truck Drivers

As a nation we are heading into a period where there will be just as many retirees as there are workers – perhaps more. Baby Boomers are now reaching retirement age and like most industries the transport industry is already starting to feel the pinch. Most new drivers choose local and intrastate driving opportunities, often shunning any truck driving jobs that keep them away from home for more than a day. This has already led to a shortage of long distance truck drivers.

In the future, and I’m talking about the next three to four years, you’ll be seeing long distance truck driving jobs that use the words “urgent” as in “urgently wanted – long distance truck drivers.” You may even find phrases such as “immediate start,” “great benefits,” and perhaps even “minimal experience required.”

Those with vision can plan now to fill those vacancies as they arise. In fact, gain a commercial drivers license now and build your experience and you’ll be a truck driver who’s not only in high demand but able to demand a top wage and benefits package. Truck drivers with good reputations are already being offered good wages to switch employers – the old-fashioned corporate head hunting at a truck driver level.

How do you take advantage of the looming truck driver shortage? First, you need quality truck driver training, then a commercial drivers license, all followed up by experience gained on the job. We can provide you with the training and help you to obtain your commercial drivers license. Even better, we can help you find that all important first truck driving job, a job that will give you experience and help launch your career.

Why You Should Take A Closer Look At ATS Heavy Equipment Training Schools

If there was one piece of advice that I could offer to anyone contemplating a career as a truck driver, heavy equipment operator, or crane operator, it would be to thoroughly check out their training options. There are a lot of training options available and they range from the totally unplanned training you receive from a friend or relative to the training programs that run for six, or even twelve months. And there are plenty of other options that sit in between.

It’s not so much the length of the training program that matters. We could put together a training program that ran for three months, and like many other training establishments that run longer courses, you will spend most of your time pushing dirt from A to B then back again; or digging a hole, then filling it in again, only to dig the same hole the next day. Practice is important, however, what is most important are the skills and knowledge you learn as they relate to the workplace.

ATS Heavy Equipment Training Schools have developed training programs designed to have graduates work ready on completion. Rather than charging you thousands of dollars for long practice sessions, our three week training program concentrates on the essential skills and knowledge required by both government regulatory authorities, and by employers. After 50 years in the business of training, we have developed strong relationships with both groups, and this has helped us fine tune our training.

Whilst training is the most important factor, it is not the only factor to look at when comparing schools. You should also consider what financial assistance each school offers, what employment assistance is offered, and what post training assistance there is.

If you decide to take a closer look at ATS Heavy Equipment Training Schools, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised on all three fronts. We offer financial assistance (including training for those qualified for government funded training programs), we have a well organized employment services department, and we continue to assist graduates where ever we can once they have completed their training. And that training is first class – don’t believe me? Put us to the test – come and take a closer look.

Dump Trucks Providing Year Round Work Opportunities

Dump truck drivers can generally find work all year round. In from spring through to fall there’s a lot of construction work across the country whilst in winter northern drivers are employed in a range of activities including snow and ice control (carting salt, for example). In the south, construction continues through winter, there’s hardly any let up at all. Some dump truck drivers have the best of both worlds – they spend their summer months in the milder northern regions and their winter months further south.

There is a shortage of truck drivers in general across the country, and that included dump truck driving. One of the disadvantages to sticking with just the one truck type is the competition, especially in winter. Some truck drivers opt for dump trucks because the work is local and they are able to spend more time with their families. Having said that, if you build up a good reputation as a dump truck driver, you’ll always be in work.

Driving a dump truck takes a different set of skills compared to most other trucks. The vehicle you’re driving tends to be shorter than most trucks, however, it can carry a lot of weight for its size. A dump truck driver will also need to learn dumping skills, and these can sometimes be quite tricky and require precision.

You can learn to become a dump truck driver in just a few weeks. ATS Heavy Equipment Training Schools have a proud truck driver training record that goes back 50 years. To survive this long, we have had to deliver truck driver training to industry standards. This means our graduates are ready to start work the moment they acquire their commercial drivers license.

Are You Frustrated By Those ‘With CDL’ Job Ads?

Looking for heavy equipment operator with CDL. Looking for excavator operator with CDL. Looking for bulldozer operator with CDL. Do these types of heavy equipment job ads frustrate you? There are thousands of heavy equipment operators who have a wide range of experiences to bring to employers, yet they lack that one important qualification – a CDL.

Employers are becoming more cost conscious these days and one of the biggest costs associated with any business is that of labor. If a business can employ workers who are multi-skilled, they can get by with fewer employee numbers, and that means lower costs. Lower costs also open the door for more tenders, and that means job security for those who are employed.

If you are a heavy equipment operator with several years experience, then you will find that you are in high demand – if you have a commercial drivers license. Employers can send you out on a job – you take your equipment out to the job site, do the job, then return, or move onto the next job site. For the employer, that’s one person doing the job of two.

Adding a CDL is a cost effective way to improve your job opportunities. It also adds a little variety to your working life. You can learn to drive a heavy equipment transport truck in as little as three weeks. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to pass your commercial drivers license tests, and to be issued with a CDL. This is effectively a license for life, the only ongoing requirement is to follow the road rules (and not have your license suspended), and to remain reasonably healthy – you will need to undergo regular health check.

Instead of becoming frustrated by those job ads, add a CDL to your skills set – you’ll no longer find those job ads frustrating.

Time The Key Factor For Today’s Truck Drivers

Are you always late? If so, you may not make it as a truck driver in today’s busy world. Time is one of the key factors to a successful truck driving career. If you consistently arrive safely on time without having run foul of the law, then you’ll develop a reputation for reliability. If you’re always late, no one is going to want to employ you.

Whether your driving a local dump truck or driving an interstate rig, truck drivers have schedules that must be met. Their schedules often dictate how other areas of a business operate. A good example is a dump truck driver delivering gravel to a road site. If the dump truck is late, work almost grinds to a halt as they wait for that gravel to work on the next section. Manufacturing often works on a just-in-time delivery system. Products are delivered and go straight into the manufacturing process. A good example is fresh produce that is processed into final products.

Truck drivers are one of the key components to a wide range of industries. In fact, some would argue that truck drivers are a key component to our society’s success. Fresh milk in your supermarket relies on several trucks – from dairy farmer to processing plant to supermarket, and to be fresh each movement needs to be done in a timely fashion.

Reliability is a trait that truck drivers can develop, however, they do need to develop that trait quite quickly. Learning how to navigate from A to B, how to follow GPS guidance, and how to avoid traffic snarls is all part and parcel of a truck driver’s job. We can train you to become a very good truck driver. It’s experience and the advice of fellow drivers that will teach you reliability.
