Now is a Good Time to Start Training

In just a couple of days, Associated Training Services will begin a new session of our heavy equipment training. The good news is, you still have time to enroll.

If by any chance, you can’t make the July 13, 2015 class date, we’ll have another one start on Monday, August 3, 2015, and then another one kicks off two weeks later. If you’re even thinking about starting a career as a truck driver or heavy equipment operator, then we’d encourage you to join one of these class dates.

Why Summer is Good for Heavy Equipment Training

The summer months are good for heavy equipment training for two major reasons:

  1. You get plenty of classroom time
  2. And when you are outside you’ll be working during the hottest months of the year, and if you can do that, the rest of it is a piece of cake

No joke. You get classroom time in a heavy equipment school. That’s because we want to make sure you understand all about the equipment and good safety practices before we turn you loose to operate it. Our instructors are seasoned pros and leave no stone unturned in teaching you everything you need to know to be a good heavy equipment operator.

Plus, if you can operate the equipment in the hottest days of the year, then you can operate it any time.

Don’t Put Off What You Can Do Today

That’s not to say, of course, that winter isn’t a good time for training. If you are ready for a new career, then any time is good for training.

The sooner you start your heavy equipment career, the more money you’ll make in the long run. Why wait? If you’re ready, the best time is now.

5 Uses for a Backhoe

One of the most versatile machines on any work site is the backhoe. If you look at it, it resembles a huge metal spider. But I’ve never met anyone who knew how to operate a backhoe who didn’t also enjoy operating one. Here are five ways you can use a backhoe to get the job done.

  1. Dig a Trench – Backhoes have a bucket on one end that is perfect for digging. You stick the teeth into the ground and dig up the dirt. You can maneuver your backhoe down a line to build a trench for piping.
  2. Uproot a Tree – If you’ve never seen anyone pull up a tree before with a backhoe, you’re missing a sweet treat for your eyes. It’s even more fun to be the one operating the backhoe.
  3. Grade a Road – There is a plow on the opposite end from the bucket. Just by pushing that plow along an even plane on a road, you can grade it, make it smooth, and put a smile on a lot of auto drivers’ faces.
  4. Push Dirt – Just about every worksite has a need for dirt to be pushed out of the way. After digging, the dirt usually piles up. Then you have to push it aside to carry on with the rest of the job. You can use your plow to push the dirt.
  5. Plow Snow – Backhoes are also good for plowing snow. Just take that plow and clear the roads.

What can you think of to do with a backhoe?

Learn to Operate a Bulldozer

Bulldozer training is one of the most important things you can do for your career. If you want a long and successful career as a heavy equipment operator, then the bulldozer is one of the essential pieces of machinery to learn how to handle.

So what do you learn in bulldozer training?

10 Types of Equipment You’ll Learn to Operate

At ATS Heavy Equipment School, we take training on all types of heavy equipment real seriously. That’s why we incorporate training for all of these pieces of machinery into the bulldozer training we offer:

  • Bulldozers (obviously)
  • Backhoes
  • Excavators
  • Front End Loaders
  • Skid Steer Loaders
  • Wheel Loaders
  • Scrapers
  • Graders
  • All-Terrain Forklifts
  • Off-Road Haul Trucks

When you graduate our bulldozer training classes, you’ll be fully versed in how to operate each piece of equipment, and that includes the proper safety procedures for operations on the work site.

You’ll Also Learn the Basic Operations of Work Site Maintenance

Of course, there is a lot more to handling heavy equipment than simply maneuvering and safety. On the work site, you’ll need to understand a few other things in order to be effective in bulldozer operations. Our instructors will also teach you:

  • How to read grades
  • Identifying soil
  • Determining work site layout
  • Worksite safety procedures
  • Heavy equipment maintenance
  • Laser levels

These skills will come in handy when and if you ever advance to management or take on a supervisory role on the work site (and we hope you do). With these skills, you’ll learn to operate and grow to become a productive contributor to any heavy equipment work site.

Celebrating Cranes and Operators

No new job leads this week. For last week’s leads, check out last Saturday’s job listings.

One thing you may notice about last week’s heavy equipment job listings is that there were a few crane operator openings around the nation. That’s a good thing. Crane operators make good things happen.

What Do Crane Operators Do?
On many work sites, crane operators are the heavy equipment specialists who move large objects and material from one location to another. They operate various types of cranes using levers, foot pedals, wheels, and other navigational instruments to get the job done.

They may also be responsible for making minor repairs to their equipment and routine maintenance. Usually, they are responsible for setting up and inspecting moving equipment before operation.

Crane operators may be called upon to operate a variety of types of heavy equipment in a variety of work environments. For instance, one day they may be in a warehouse moving pallets with forklifts and conveyor belts. The next day they may be on a construction site moving lumber or dirt and rock. Telephone companies use cranes for lifting their workers into the air for tree trimming.

Who Hires Crane Operators?
A lot of different industries and types of companies hire crane operators. Here’s a sampling of the types of employers you may work for as a crane operator:

  • The military
  • Defense contractors
  • Construction companies
  • Mining operations
  • Trucking companies
  • Shipping industry
  • Fisheries
  • Oil & gas exploration companies
  • Logging operations
  • Utility companies

And that’s not all. There are a ton of different types of businesses and industries that employ crane operators. Heavy Equipment School celebrates the crane operator as an essential part of today’s workforce. Learn how you can become a certified crane operator right now.

For instance, those job openings for “riggers” are not going to be available to someone who has decided it looks like fun to wear a hard hat — because the rigger is a very important person on a job site. Riggers need to be certified, and federal regulations require certification like that offered through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). ATS is one of the few places in the US that provides that kind of professional qualification.
