4 Types of Heavy Equipment Training

Training to be a heavy equipment operator is not something you could take lightly. As Baby Boomers begin to retire, more positions for operators will open up. Now is the time to start your equipment training if you want a lucrative career in heavy equipment.

But you should know that there are different types of heavy equipment and, therefore, different types of heavy equipment training.

Here are 4 types of heavy equipment training. Pick the one that is right for you.

  1. Heavy equipment – First off, let’s define what we mean by heavy equipment. On the typical job site, you’ll run into these types of big machines — Backhoes, wheel loaders, scrapers, excavators, bulldozers, road graders, dump trucks, skid steers, and forklifts. At Heavy Equipment School, you’ll learn how to operate them all.
  2. Mobile crane – Mobile crane operators are a different breed. You’ll learn how to operate fixed and swing cab hydraulic cranes, lattice booms, articulated booms, and get your rigger/signalperson certification.
  3. Rigging – If you desire to become a rigger or a signalperson, then you can take training and receive certification just for that career position. Riggers make darn good money and enjoy a long, fulfilling career–especially if they excel at the job.
  4. Truck driver – Finally, if you have any desire to be a long haul truck driver or a construction site driver, then you can get your CDL license and be a huge asset to any work crew. No construction site can do without a truck driver, and these positions require special certification so they pay more.

You can start your career as a heavy equipment operator on the right foot with the right training.

New John Deere Wheel Loaders

Amounting to what the company considers more capable wheel loaders its customers can simply “do more with,” John Deere has revamped its three Utility Class wheel loaders with power and operator comfort updates.

The new 444K, 524K, and 544K are each powered by Deere PowerTech Tier 4 Final engines producing 124 horsepower, 141 hp and 163 hp on the respective models. Deere says the engine provides ample torque for maintaining good boom and bucket speed in and out of a pile for heaped loads, even in wet or hard-packed material.

The new loaders are outfitted with excavator-style, load-sensing hydraulics and Deere’s PowerShift torque-converter transmission which constantly monitors speed and load conditions. Plus, the new top-of-the-line 544K features a standard five-speed transmission with lockup torque converter which boosts acceleration reduces cycle times and optimizes power and fuel efficiency during transport, roading, and ramp climbing in gears 2 through 5.

Inside the cab operators will find a new color monitor where diagnostic and maintenance info is displayed along with a new high-back, air-ride seat. The cab also features reduced engine noise, a keyless start and one of two radio options: an AM/FM/WB with auxiliary port or an AM/FM/WB and Sirius/XM Satellite Radio with auxiliary port, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. The loaders can be outfitted with Deere’s Ultimate Uptime telematics service which provides pre-delivery and follow-up inspections, three years of JDLink telematics, machine health prognostics, and remote diagnostics.

The Importance of a Good Rigger on the Jobsite

Riggers are important people on the heavy equipment job site. If you are working heavy construction, a good rigger can save your life.

Recently, I spoke to a gentleman who told me a story about an accident he had on scaffolding. It wasn’t high off the ground, but he did step onto a plank that wasn’t secured properly and immediately was thrown into the scaffolding uprights. He hurt himself a little bit. No broken bones or serious injury, but it did bruise him fairly well.

His mistake: He didn’t inspect the scaffolding a fellow worker put together for him. If he had, he’d have seen his fellow worker’s error.

Rigger’s Save Lives

I don’t know if these workers were certified. They weren’t involved in the heavy equipment industry. They were painting a house. But on a heavy equipment job site, the rigger is the person who puts all the equipment together and inspects it for safety. They are usually an expert in tying knots, rigging hitches, and performing other tasks in lifting and securing heavy objects. That’s why they are so important.

Associated Training Services (ATS) offers a rigging certification course to train your riggers in all aspects of keeping your work team safe.

OSHA regulations require riggers to be certified. By enrolling in this course, you’ll learn how to be a good rigger and get your certification, which means you’ll be legal and qualified. There aren’t many schools that offer a rigging course. ATS is one of them.
