How To Find Heavy Equipment Operator Jobs

Finding work in any field is a little difficult, particularly at this time of the year and given the current economic conditions. There are heavy equipment operator jobs around, however, they can be difficult to track down. There are a number of reasons for this, one being the way employers go about looking for new operators.

Heavy equipment operations is one of those industries where ‘who you know’ can be very important. Before using traditional advertising channels, employers are more likely to promote vacancies to those within their businesses, allowing word-of-mouth to promote any vacancies. Employers are also keen to use services like our job website. This site allows an employer to advertise directly to operators who are looking for work.

When looking for work as a heavy equipment operator, sometimes it’s quicker and easier to look on our jobs website rather than in a newspaper. After all, would you rather pay to advertise to the public at large (newspaper) or use a free service that advertises a vacancy to a target audience? Employers also know which jobs websites deliver the best results, and we do very well in that respect.

With Christmas Day only a few days away, job listings are going to be quiet. However, in the New Year we suggest you regularly visit our jobs website to see the latest job listings. You can also subscribe to this site – each Saturday we publish a round-up of the latest job listings. By subscribing, you can receive that post each Saturday directly into your inbox. We also list job vacancies for crane operators and truck drivers.

Heavy Equipment Job Listings: November 3, 2012

Heavy equipment operator job listings will go through an unsettled period in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. For some construction businesses, everything has come to a standstill as they try to assess the damage done to work in progress. Hundreds, if not thousands, of heavy equipment operators, truck drivers, and crane operators are going to be needed to help with clean-up efforts, repairs, and with the demolition and rebuilding of buildings badly damaged. There are a lot of roads that are going to need work on as well.

Right now, heavy equipment job listings are fairly light, although that follows a rather heavy list of job opportunities last listed last weekend. There is plenty going on in the south and west in states that were not affected by Hurricane Sandy, however, there will be operators from these areas who will be called in to help with the cleanup. Heavy Equipment Job Listings: October 20, 2012

In a period in which the economy is sluggish, jobs can be hard to find. The construction industry is generally the first to defy this trend, and over the past two years, it has led the way when it comes to growth. Heavy equipment operators, truck drivers, and crane operators are all in demand, however, that demand is ever-changing and often moves from state to state. There is a reason for this.

As projects come to an end, operators and drivers start to drift to new locations – their work there is done. One project finishes, another starts, however, it’s often hundreds of miles away, perhaps even in a new state. This draws in operators and drivers chasing the money that is often on offer for big projects. This leaves shortages at a local level, and those shortages mean there are plenty of job opportunities for others. The following jobs have been listed over the last two weeks – check with our jobs website for more information on these or any new jobs.

                  Complexities Of Crane Operations

One of the more challenging machines in the heavy equipment field has to be a crane. A quick look at one of the job vacancies listed over the weekend gives you an indication of what is expected of a crane operator. Because of the complexities of this type of work, authorities have made it compulsory for crane operators to be certified before they can commence work operating a crane.

The weekend’s crane operator job listing required, in part, an operator:

Will observe load hook-up and determine safety of load using load charts and lift plans. Must be able to judge spaces correctly and handle many controls at the same time. Will initiate lifts, hoists and movements according to written, verbal or signaled instructions.

Whilst that may sound complex, most operators perform these actions day-in and day-out, almost on auto pilot. Of course, the job can’t be done on auto pilot alone when you need to refer to load charts and lift plans. To begin with, you have to have a clear understanding of these charts, how to read them, and how to apply the current situation to those charts.

When it comes to judging spaces, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can learn this aspect of crane operations, even when operating a multitude of controls. Experienced operators do appear to be handling this side of their work on autopilot – and they may well do so. If you drive a car, you soon learn to judge distances and speed – it’s a similar concept when operating a crane.

The key to successfully acquiring the abilities to perform as required in this job ad is through your crane operator training. You should be able graduate from your training with a reasonably good knowledge of load charts, and experience with judging distance and space. It goes without saying that your training includes reading hand signals and other communications devices. As a crane operator, you’re often blind to many aspects of a lift, so you will be relying heavily on those around you to give clear and easy to understand signal.

Crane operator training may teach you how to operate the levers in a crane, however, it is just as important to learn the the non-operational side as well.

Applying For Heavy Equipment Job Vacancies

When applying for any job vacancy, the main aim of your application is to get to the interview stage. This is generally a face-to-face interview, however, interstate job applications may go through a telephone interview initially. So why do so many heavy equipment job applications fail? In most cases, it’s because the applicant got the basics wrong. So how should you apply for a heavy equipment job vacancy?

It all starts with the employer’s job ad – read it thoroughly since most job ads tell you exactly what an employer is looking for. Pay particular attention to the following:

Method of application – employers are busy. They are managing a business, equipment and employees so they can only devote so much time to vetting potential recruits. An employer will list their preferred method of application because it suits their busy schedule. If the job ad requests written applications through snail mail, then use that method. If it’s an online application, or email application, then use that method. Don’t just rock up to a workplace because you know they have a vacancy, chances are you’ll be turned away.

Experience – if a job ad asks for five years experience and you are new to heavy equipment operations, your application won’t make it through the first read. Most job ads don’t ask for experience – target them first.

Equipment type – if an employer asks for a grader operator and you prefer bulldozers, if your experience is in bulldozers, you may find your application is rejected fairly quickly. Apply for job vacancies that suit your experience.

Your job application needs to prove to a potential employer that you are a good fit for the job. This will lead to an interview where that perception can be proven. Don’t lie on your application, don’t pretend to be what you’re not – the interview process will soon demonstrate that, and you’ll look the fool. If your application is impressive, and you interview well, you may not land that particular job, however, your name may well stick in their mind for the next vacancy.

If you really want a particular job, then read that job ad carefully, then submit an application that answers the employer’s requirements. Get that right and you’ll get the chance to prove yourself in an interview. Get those basics wrong and your application will end up in the waste bin and you’ll become more disheartened and frustrated. These tips hold true for any job vacancy including heavy equipment operations, truck driving, and crane operations.

Looking for work as a heavy equipment operator, truck driver or crane operator? Check our dedicated job site. Job vacancies are posted on a regular basis.
